UK government transport technology: What is it?
From sustainability to pressures of rising populations, transport technology is becoming an essential consideration for the public sector.
UK government transport technology is becoming a much more spoken about topic in the world of public sector procurement. With increasing eyes on sustainability and how technology can help transport within the UK become more cost-efficient and reduce the impacts on the environment.
What is transport technology?
The definition of transport technology is quite vague, in fairness. Technology that supports the transport infrastructure within the UK can include monitoring and management systems, physical goods such as street lighting and electronic signage and also control systems for parking and traffic. There’s a lot of different technologies that can help benefit transport within the UK.
One big change we’re seeing however is the increase in use of Smart solutions and IoT technologies. Having connected transport tech is very important for local governments and – although admittedly a bit of a buzz word – Smart technology provides a connectivity and data collection possibility for gov. This gives them a chance to monitor more clearly and make changes and suggestions in future – and with an ever-increasing focus on sustainability, provides valuable ways of measuring this.
IoT makes sure these services and the transport structure is connected and flowing right – a network of interlinking technologies that help function, as well as collect data to help improve the systems moving forward. So we’re now seeing more of this being tested across the country!
What is happening in the public sector?
Some local councils are already putting IoT systems in place, and creating ‘smart cities’. For example, City of London has tested solutions for IoT within its structure. As well as emissions monitoring in parts of the city. A great use of the technology!
In fact, as well as the work individual public sector organisations are doing, the government have been offering grants to suppliers of ‘safer, greener travel’ solutions. As well as the UK government very recently committing to a Future of Transport programme which aims to:
- Create innovation in the transport sector
- Create and improve the current transport markets
- Making transport tech more sustainable and making sure the UK is a leader in this area moving forward
As we said before, the use of transport technology to help create a more sustainable transport structure in the UK is a priority for the UK. So we’re seeing more initiatives and procurements taking place.
Okay, so what next for UK government transport technology?
There are plans to launch a new framework this Spring for UK government transport technology solutions. Transport Technology & Associated Services is due to replace the current Traffic Management Technology 2 framework. Its scope incorporates a lot of the technology we’ve mentioned here, and much more. Equally putting an important emphasis on sustainability too!
So there you have it. Although quite broad, we can see the shift to incorporate more sustainable solutions into traffic technology and how UK government uses it. As well as more capacity to monitor and collect data, in order to improve the services provided already. This year, with much needed new routes to procure these services, we’ll being seeing new technologies transforming our transport across the UK.
