The inspirational women of UK GovTech
In celebration of International Women’s Day, we’re championing the wonderful women in Government Technology.
As the public sector seeks to lead the way with digital transformation, we must celebrate the women who are not only making this happen, but are bringing us one step closer to a gender-balanced world. So, in no particular order, here’s just five of many inspirational women in government technology:
- Jacky Wright – Chief Digital and Information Officer, HMRC
Jacky is truly a pioneer when it comes to government technology. Her career ranges across numerous industries, with CIO experience at GE and BP, and she is now leading one of the largest public sector digital transformation programmes in Europe. As the winner of UKtech50 2018, she is undoubtedly an influential woman in gov tech.
- Zainab Hussain – Lead Pharmacist of Clinical Informatics, Lewisham & Greenwich NHS Trust
An expert in electronic medicines management, Zainab is leading the way in utilising technology to improve patient care across the NHS. She has experience of working with a number of NHS Trusts, is a Digital Health Leader as part of the NHS Digital Academy, and is part of the NHS Digital Pioneer Fellowship. Brilliant!
- Nicola Graham – Head of ICT at Aberdeenshire Council
Nicola has worked with Aberdeenshire Council for 8 years, one of the first Scottish councils to embrace cloud-based service management. Alongside this, she is also President of SOCITM UK, a network of digital transformation leaders in public services. When it comes to government technology, it’s safe to say she knows what shes talking about.
- Sarah Wilkinson – CEO at NHS Digital
With a background in Police ICT and at the Home Office, Sarah is now responsible for the delivery of all tech services for counter terrorism, the UK border, visas and immigration, and asylum and policing. Not an easy task to take on, but she is more than equipped for the role.
- Jennifer Allum – Head of GOV.UK
Head of the government’s digital frontline service, and head of product for GOV.UK Verify, Jennifer is a prominent figure in the world of digital identity. This area is currently one of central governments biggest tech priorities, and we’re excited to see where Jennifer and her department lead us!
Of course, to the many, many more women involved in public sector digital transformation, here’s to you. Continue being champions in your fields, and remember to celebrate yourselves – not just today, but every day.
To finish, a quote from another inspirational woman in tech: ’As women we have to make double the effort. Don’t give up…if the door is shut, break the glass’ – Mary Akangbe, Founder & President at Zenith Global Health
