Part 3: Adventures in my first job out of full-time education
I have really enjoyed my second month in my new position (disregarding the weather and dark nights!), and continue to have completely new experiences.
One of the more bizarre experiences I’ve had recently was attending the Brighton and Hove Chamber of Commerce ‘Networking on Ice’. I was really looking forward to this because I thought it would be a great ice-breaker (intentional!) so that I would feel more comfortable networking. By the afternoon it was teeming down so I gave the actual skating a miss and opted to watch some of the more daring individuals brave the ice. I also managed to talk to quite a few people, it is definitely getting much easier, and even handed out a few business cards which is still pretty exciting – it really is the little things!
I’ve also had the opportunity to sit in on a large amount of webinars, lots for our clients but also a few for marketing purposes from other sources such as twitter. This has been invaluable as next Friday I am leading my first Webinar, it is only a test with only Chris, the Director, attending but it’s still a new experience and a skill I need to develop. I think it will be really useful in terms of developing my public speaking which is something that I’m sure will help me when I am at networking events.
I have just spent a day of training focussed on procurement and OJEU processes. It has filled in the gaps that I honestly didn’t even realise I had. I know I’m going to have to do more research because it was a lot of information to cover in one day. The training gave me a broad overview of the whole process, as well as how frameworks fit into the equation and other tender processes. It was more focussed on the perspective of buyers, and how to ensure tender documents are compliant. Although this is not my perspective of procurement it has helped me to understand their viewpoint and what they need. Which can only be good!
So the last month has been packed with brand new experiences for me, and looking at my calendar for December I can see that it’s not going to stop!
